How will Effective cavity wall insulation help me?
A cavity wall is made of two separate thin walls. By filling this gap with insulating material, you add an additional layer of heat protection between your internal walls and external walls, meaning the temperature outside won’t affect the temperatures inside your home as easily. The insulating material will stop heat transfer and heat loss, making your home much more comfortable to live in.
Typically mineral wool, polystyrene beads, or polyurethane foam will be used to fill cavity walls. This is because these materials are known for their insulation properties and low thermal conductivity. Insulating materials like these prevent heat transfer and keep heat locked into your home, rather than letting heat escape through your home’s external walls.

Is cavity wall insulation right for my home?
If your house was built in the last 20 years or so, the walls are probably already insulated. If you’re not sure whether a) your walls have cavities, or b) if you have cavity wall insulation already, we can help.
You’ll need to first make sure you have a cavity wall to begin with. If you don’t, then another insulation option will need to be picked out. A cavity wall is made up of an inner wall and outer wall, and the insulation is then installed in the gap between the two layers.
Homes built after the 1920s will typically have cavity walls, and those before will have solid walls. These can still be insulated with internal wall insulation or external wall insulation.

Most houses built since the 1990s already have wall insulation, but if your house is older than that, it may not have any.
Your home could be suitable for standard cavity wall insulation if:
- Its external walls are unfilled cavity walls
- Your cavity is at least 50mm wide, and is clear of rubble
- The masonry or brickwork of your property is in good condition
- The outside walls are not exposed to driving rain
- Your house is not at risk of flooding

How is cavity wall insulation installed inside the wall?
Most cavity walls can be insulated by injecting insulation material into the cavity from the outside. Your installer will drill small 22mm drill holes at intervals in your outer walls, inject insulation through the holes using specialist equipment, and then seal them with cement.
The insulation materials are usually either mineral wool or polystyrene beads, but polyurethane foam may sometimes be used instead.
Once all the insulation is in, we’ll fill the holes in the brickwork so you’ll barely notice them.
How long does it take to insulate cavity walls?
Filling cavity walls is not a job you can do yourself, you will need to employ an approved installer that uses the right certified products. Effective Home can usually do the job in around two hours for an average house with easily accessible cavity walls.
It shouldn’t make any mess, and the only noticeable signs that you have had cavity wall insulation installed will be the very small evenly placed holes on the outer wall.
Does old cavity wall insulation need to be removed?
In some instances, a property may have already had its cavity walls insulated, but this may have been done some time ago and the lifespan of the cavity barrier may have elapsed, or it may be poorly installed in the first place, meaning that it needs replacing.
Old or damaged insulation can affect energy efficiency and therefore energy bills, and also potentially impact health if the end result is issues with mould or similar.
If you suspect your cavity wall insulation has failed then it will need to be assessed before being removed. There are several methods to remove cavity wall insulation, but the most common involves the use of high-pressure air to dislodge and break up old insulation, which is then carefully caught and removed.
Only when the old insulation and any issues that may have caused it to fail have been remedied, can the new cavity wall insulation be installed.

The Cavity Insulation Guarantee Agency (CIGA) is an insurance guarantee agency designed to offer support and protection and 25-year guarantees to consumers when their installer is registered with them.
Effective Home is NOT registered with CIGA. Instead, we’re registered with both HIES and QualityMark Protection which offers similar protections (25-year guarantee) for you as a customer when getting cavity wall insulation from a registered installer like Effective Home.

Can cavity wall insulation cause damp?
You may have seen rumours that cavity wall insulation can cause damp patches in your home, but this isn’t strictly true. Whilst plenty of builders argue that cavity walls should be left empty to allow the property to breathe, if you choose the right insulation material then your walls will still be able to breathe.
With a top-quality installer, you won’t need to worry about damp problems, because damp prevention will be at the forefront of their minds like it is for us at Effective Home. That way, you can keep all the heat inside your home, and all the damp out.
Of course, in order for the insulation to be effective, you’ll need to ensure that there are no issues with the construction of the walls that might allow damp bridging to occur.
